What If A Smelly Gas Comes Out While Operating Compressors

Recently, some customers reported that their air compressors had a bad smell while operating, and had no idea whether there is someting wrong with the air compressors. Particularly while some equipment operating for a long time without interruption, the smell will be even worse. We might think the air compressor emits a bad smell especially in summer. But you probably don't know what happened to it? Does the air compressor go wrong? Don't worry please, we will explain the reason that why there is bad smell and give solutions.240712954_4170628573021227_6777536954300562821_n.jpg

  • The injection oil applied in the compressor contains polar anti-wear additives, which are mainly phosphorus/ sulfur/ chlorine. When temperature going up too high, the air contains a lot of oxygen, and the polar anti-wear additives oxidize to produce smelly gas. The polar anti-wear additives are generally not recommended to be applied in the high temperature, just like the ordinary gear oils applied in the high-temperature chains, the workshop will be fulll of the bad smell.

  • The substances brought into the air, especially containing phosphorus/ sulfur/ chlorine. Check if there is any chemical gas or the dust containing chemical substances around.

  • The rubber hose may be made from neoprene. It was dissolved by the high-temperature lubricating oil, the chlorine is oxidized in the high-temperature environment and producing smelly gas. One of the possible reason is that the diester synthetic compressor oil is applied. Diester is easily dissolved, and it is relatively corrosive as well. General rubber, especially in high temperature, is easy to swell (partially swell). Generally neoprene is not recommended for application in high-temperature and high-pressure environments.

  • In order to make the alternative oil green, the pigments not resistant to the high temperature are added. Most of the pigments contain elements like  phosphorus/ sulfur/ chlorine. Pigments contain oxygen and produce the smelly gas in high temperature. It's effective to test the oil, just like the blood test, it directly reflects the problem.

All these above are the reasons that ususally cause the bad smell of the air compressor, and the probability of failure of the compressor itself is not high. Check one by one according to the different part, you will be able to solve the problem successfully.
